How to alter the look of phpbb3
Posted August 9th 2011, 3:43pm
Hi! I saw in one of Dion's post a link to a Facebook forum and I am wondering if someone can help me with the coding of this particular part? It actually looks the same as Forumotion's.

Two comments.

One, you're correct, that category display is based on the "multi-forum" display tutorial on the FM help board. However, it's been enhanced so each forum has its own "New Posts" icon when there are new posts.

Two, the founder of that board recently resigned, and the new owner will be re-organizing the forums. When that occurs, the "multi-forum" display will go away.

Dion, is there a tutorial on this enhanced version? I'd really like to have each of my forums have its own "New Posts" when there are new posts.

Thank you in advance.

There's no tutorial, but you know, I think it would be a good idea to have one. When I get some time (in a couple weeks), I'll write something up.

Hey Dion!

I know you're busy, but wanted to ask if you'll be doing a tutorial on this in the near future?

Thank you in advance. :)

Sorry for the delay, my day job has kept me very busy the past couple months. That's why I haven't been posting much here (or elsewhere).

I actually started writing this up but never got around to finishing it. I'll try to finish it this weekend.

Please note that this topic has been moved to the General Javascript Questions forum.
In addition, the remainder of this post can only be viewed by those who have replied in this topic. So please do not distribute this code. Thank you!

Here's how to add a new post indicator to the "multi-forum" display on phpBB3 boards. This will probably work on IPB2/Invision boards as well, but I haven't tried it.

First, you must turn on the subforum displays. ACP>Display>Structure&Hierarchy, sublevel links on index: with pics. Next, you must add the "ddtitle" class name to every forum link in the "multi-forum" HTML. So, if you have links of the form A href="forumURL", you should make them A class="ddtitle" href="forumURL". Once you have added the "ddtitle" class names, add the following to the end of your "multi-forum" HTML:

<img src="http://illiweb.com/fa/empty.gif" onload="fixmulti(this)" />

Repeat this process in every forum description where you have defined "multi-forums". Finally, place the following function inside any javascript file you have defined "in all the pages":

function fixmulti(elem) {

    var z=elem.parentNode;
    var x=$(z).find('.ddtitle').get();
    var y=$(z).find('a>img').get();
    for (i=x.length-1; i>=0; i--) {
        if (y[i].title == 'New posts') {$(x[i]).before('<b>New! <b>');}
    }
    for (i=z.childNodes.length-1; i>=0; i--) {
        if (z.childNodes[i] == elem) {return;}
        else {$(z.childNodes[i]).remove();}
    }
}

Now, when there are new posts, they will be preceded by New! in boldface text. If you want an image, add an IMG tag instead of what I have above. If you want the indicator elsewhere, change the contents in the if(){} statement.

Surely this can be done with displaying the subforums? And checking for the new icon there?

EDIT: ... *sigh* nevermind.
Dion loves his hide tags.
