Javascript Performance (FM vs. Commercial Forum Software)
Posted September 17th 2012, 5:25pm
I have 4 sites, 3 on forumotion and 1 vBulletin
all my sites are www.

I noticed that the Javascript performance is very slow with forumotion sites but much better and very fast with vBulletin. why? is this related to forumotion software?

It is very much related to your being on forumotion. A free host does not give you the ability to alter the PHP files, so you are stuck with HTML that you may or may not want. On forumotion, there is a LOT of HTML that you do not want, is served in a format you don't desire, or is not served at all. That forces you to use javascript to correct these deficiencies. The problem is, javascript is extremely slow with manipulating HTML/DOM.

This is one of many reasons why it is a good idea to move from forumotion to your own site. You can modify the PHP files so they serve the exact HTML you want, and javascript will only be used to handle client-side events (clicks, mouse movements, etc).

I wonder how many people on forumotion realize just how sluggish their boards are, compared to a REAL phpBB3, vB3/vB4, SMF, or MyBB board...

I agree although vBulletin does have its advantages. It has Quick Edit by default and when you submit a quick reply it submits without loading another page. One of my favorite things about it

without dion, phpbb3 wouldn't be as optimized for us, and I doubt I'd ever keep using it due to dion's support!
